Returning to the Familiar

Two years apart can feel like a lifetime.

It was January 2019 and I set out to start a YouTube channel.

Why start one this late in the video content-creation game?

Well, I had some ideas that were marinating in my head for a while now, and I started the channel simply because I felt there was something missing.

I had a voice and here was this platform to raise awareness or to bring forth new perspectives.

I felt like I had something to say.

And now almost two years later, I returned to this same spot.

The spot where I awkwardly gave my first brief talk in front of the camera.

The one where my video channel got its shaky start.

The day where the lens was pointed at me.

It was time to come back to this location and do it more justice than I did on that cold January evening.

And so in 2021, I set out to that same old place once again.

Just the video thumbnail alone is meant to pay homage to the past. See the similarities? (Including the same tree.)

All of this work was towards something, all the while honoring the past.

Know your roots, know why you started in the first place.

Don’t look back but for one moment, acknowledge it, then take a step forward.

At the risk of sounding pretentious, I was put on this planet to see beautiful things.

Returning to the familiar showed me this, and gave me a way towards the next big thing.

The next photo trip I take, will be the best one yet.

Simply because it is the next big thing to work towards.

Are you a reflective person by nature? What helps keep you centered and helps with creating more? Let me know in the comments down below.
